CHAPEL HILL AP On John White map Paquippe today Lake Mattamuskeet spans over 30 000 acres in Hyde County Water lapped the shoreline last week offering little sign that pumps and schemes failed to drain the lake Causeway N C 94 bisects the lake while the Southern Land Reclamation Company built the world s largest pumping station to reclaim land In 1928 1931 vast efforts reclaimed 4 000 acres including a 1 400 acre soybean field But back seepage and root rot returned water and land alike forcing repeated pumping and the revival of New Holland village The project ended with government sale in 1934 and today the pumps stand idle as wildlife channels and scrub surround the lake
