Bald Head Island Purchase Faces Public Support Pressure

Winston-Salem AP Director Roy Sowers of the state Department of Conservation and Development warned that if the General Assembly approves the Bald Head Island purchase, legislators must show strong public support for spending millions in tax money. He noted private taxpayers must demonstrate demand for the island purchase, adding there is no clear political backing in the current session for either gubernatorial veto or gubernatorial term limits. He did not specify a price, saying appraisers would set costs in a condemnation action, and argued funds could instead go to mental health, roads, teacher salaries, and water and sewer projects to leverage local and federal funds.
