In 1961 scientists warned millions may have been exposed to SV-40 a cancer causing virus in polio vaccines. SV-40 survived vaccine processes and could cause cancer in animals though human links remained unproven. Adenoviruses and other viruses were later studied for cancer connections in animals and humans.
