Rocket-firing National Guardsmen stormed Montana State Prison, freeing 21 hostages after 34 hours of revolt. Convicts dug a tunnel as guardsmen moved in, killing ringleaders Jerry Myles and Lee Smart. Authorities plan one week of patrols around the facility.
In Epitaph Deer Lodge Montana authorities report slain burglar Jerry Myles a six time offender from Butte left a blood stained epitaph near his body in a prison tower. The card proclaimed an individualist stance and refused to speak or be ranted at by others.
Walter Jones, 24, a prison sociologist, spent 36 hours amid doped prisoners during the ill fated Montana prison riot. He worked to preserve order, explain the convicts wishes to authorities, and convey their story to newsmen despite growing danger and limited control.
Strikers at the Harriet Henderson Cotton Mills will vote Sunday on a one year contract negotiated under Gov. Luther Hodges mediation. The 23 week strike ended Friday night with a wage increase planned 56 days after resumption. About 1100 workers must ratify the deal, which union leaders say protects pay and avoids wage cuts.
