Withholding Tax System To Be Revised
Francis M. Lemay reports in Washington that the House Ways and Means Committee, led by Chairman Doughton, advances a simplification bill aimed at easing or eliminating tax returns for about 30 million workers. Starting January 1 next year the wage and salary tax withholding will be revised so payroll deductions cover the full tax liability for those earning up to five thousand dollars annually. The plan does not alter this year’s withholdings and assigns government computation of 1944 taxes for some taxpayers.
