The Associated Press recounts an invasion of Cuba as mercenaries allied with the United States allegedly landed at multiple southern and eastern points. Raul Roa accuses U.S. aid while Dean Rusk says there will be no large scale intervention. Castrol asserts forces advance and call for order.
Secretary of State Rusk warned the Laos situation is dangerous and urged immediate clarification with the Soviet Union on cease-fire timing. He noted Russia's delay may invite US and SEATO intervention while discussions with Britain and other allies continue. The British foreign office said Moscow’s note leaves room for talks but no immediate cease-fire, pending allied discussions.
Adolf Eichmann formally pleads not guilty as the three man court opens the trial in Jerusalem. Prosecutor Gideon Hausner accuses him of complicity in the deaths of six million Jews. Eichmann answers each time with a firm not guilty as the legal proceedings begin.
Dr J S Dorton 65 long time North Carolina State Fair manager and Cleveland County Fair operator died at his Shelby home after a second heart attack. Native of Concord he built the state fair into a profitable enterprise since taking over in 1937 and valued fairs as big business not just agriculture. He retired from veterinary practice years ago and loved the fair life.
A predawn blaze ripped through two wood stables at Maywood Park in Melrose Park suburbs, killing three men and 42 horses. One victim reportedly guided animals to safety before perishing. Fire teams saved 30 trotters and pacers, moved 40 more as embers threatened stalls, and battled flames driven by a 20 mile wind.
Secretary of State Dean Rusk said the United States will not intervene as anti Castro forces reportedly land in Cuba. He called the Cuba situation disorderly and said the Cuban people must decide their fate while protests blame the United States.

IRS Commissioner Mortimer Caplin seeks to audit about 3 million of the 61 million anticipated returns, raising the audit rate from 1 in 20 to roughly 1 in 10. He defends audits as a fairness check to ensure neighbors pay their fair share and notes taxpayers may be represented and appeal within IRS or in federal courts.
Governor Sanford says 10 to 15 million dollars yearly are lost due to bookkeeping errors and exemptions in the sales tax. He urges elimination of exemptions to strengthen enforcement and fund a 70 million dollar school improvements plan, noting the legislature faces a finance challenge. He expects the finance committee to review all tax proposals.
Four unidentified bandits smashed shop windows in Kings Mountain North Carolina around 12 45 a m and fled with an estimated 2000 dollars in merchandise including watches bracelets and rings. A trail of empty boxes led away from U S 74 toward Bethware School four miles west. Police issued an all points bulletin for the suspects.
Dr Otis A Singletary former University of Texas faculty has been elected chancellor of the Woman's College unit of the Consolidated University of North Carolina in Raleigh He succeeds Dr Gordon Blackwell who left to head Florida State University Singletary a Louisiana native and WWII Navy veteran will lead Greensboro based college unit after acting chancellor W W Pierson currently filling in interim duties The 40 year old historian holds degrees from Millsaps LSU and a PhD from LSU prior to joining the Texas faculty.
A spring snowstorm sweeping from the Dakotas across the Midwest dumped heavy wet snow with winds up to 50 mph. Fresh snow crept to over a foot in northern Minnesota with drifts reaching 10 feet, causing major road closures and at least 18 deaths mainly from traffic accidents.
