The West Hickory post office in a store near Hickory was robbed of 21.53 early today. Entry came through a window pried with an axe taken from the Southern Desk company. Money order blanks and stamps were not disposed. Police were left with no clues.
The House approved an increase of conference committee members from nine to twelve by oral vote. The Senate opposed the proposal, signaling a clash over legislative procedure and committee size.
A bill introduced in the North Carolina house seeks strict supervision of power companies by the corporation commission. It requires semiannual reports on generation transmission purchases sales and income and approval of contracts with holding or operating firms. The measure also mandates uniform bookkeeping and gives the commission audit appraisal and inspection powers.
Emperor Hirohito ordered Reijiro Wakateuki to form a new cabinet after Premier Yuko Hamaguchi and his ministers resigned. Wakateuki, a former premier, had served as Japan's chief delegate to the London Naval Conference last year.

The Pinewood slaying of Mayor E Clyde Geddings enters a second day of investigation with motives still unclear. Authorities question leads as reward of 190 offered for information guiding to the killer. The mayor was shot in the back at his home as he read a newspaper.
Dr. Dillon Morris 35 a specialist in children's diseases died in Goldsboro after stomach hemorrhages. He fell ill Monday and three blood transfusions failed to save him. Survived by mother widow three brothers William Lee John R and Joe all of Goldsboro and sister Mrs John O Day of Greensboro.
Mrs. Zera Kenney twenty four of Galax Virginia was in critical condition at Mount Airy hospital after a bullet wound sustained last night in a restaurant on the Fancy Gap road authorities said the injury appeared accidental and under investigation.
Durham April 17 The medical society of North Carolina will open its 78th annual convention next Monday in Durham. The three day meet will feature the installation of Dr M Bl Stevens of Asheville as president elect and the election of four members to the state board of health.
Paris reports France formally recognizes the new Spanish republic after a note from the Spanish embassy and a conference between Premier Laval and Foreign Minister Briand. Chile followed with recognition via note to the U S secretary.
Three ministers of the new republic, Indalecio Prieto, Fernando De Los Rios, and Nicolau Dovor, flew to Barcelona to discuss preventing Catalonia's secession with Colonel Macia's envoy Dr. Carrasco. Madrid warned it could use force if needed to keep Spain intact.
Four persons including a man woman and two children were burned to death in a tent on the Longview road three miles from Kilgore Texas. Gas from a leaking pipeline filled the tent and ignited when the flame reached it. Searchers recovered the bodies.
The agriculture department reported improved cotton quality with 13,730,600 bales ginned last season. White cotton rose to 87.1 percent from 84.3, and 69.3 percent met white middling or better, while staple length shifted toward shorter grades. Tenderable cotton reached 84.6 percent of total, with 74.4 percent of upland in staple from inch to 11-32 inches and 56.4 percent tenderable overall.
The Style Shop at 103 North Main Street is nearly ready to reopen with a spring merchandise line. Manager Miss Edna Schwartz announced the store will be open for business tomorrow.
Bryan Untiedt 13 year old hero of the Colorado bus disaster is awarded a four year scholarship by Washington College President Dr Paul E Hitsworth. The award covers fees room rent board and tuition effective upon high school graduation and follows recognition of his bravery during the incident. The college board of governors approved the award.
The Southern Trust conference opened its fourth annual convention in Charleston South Carolina with R Goodwyn Rhett welcoming delegates from Peoples State Bank Gilbert T Stephenson of Wilmington Del led the initial session Speakers included James Perkins of City Bank and Farmers Trust New York William C Bowman of First National Bank Montgomery Ala and Robert Oyland Jr of Atlanta A banquet tonight will feature Rome C Stephenson of South Bend Ind president of the American Bankers Association as principal speaker.
In a Managua and Bluefields notice Secretary Stimson said the United States cannot provide general protection for Americans in Nicaragua. Citizens are advised to evacuate inland or to coast towns with port-area protection by U S ships Memphis Asheville and Sacramento.

The North Carolina House passed the committee substitute redistricting bill for state senatorial districts. It creates 32 districts with two or three senators in key areas including 20th 24th and counties Forsyth Davie Rowan Mecklenburg Cabarrus Stanley Caswell. The measure moves to the Senate with districts and populations listed, including Perquimans Chowan Pasquotank Camden Currituck and Hertford in the first district and Dare Martin Turrell Washington Beaufort Hyde Pamlico in the second.
The Clarence Saunders Stores of Northern California, Limited filed a voluntary petition in bankruptcy in federal court in San Francisco. The brief filing noted the action per a resolution by the directors and was signed by secretary J. J. Walsh. The chain operates 42 stores in Northern California.
The Wickersham commission has nearly finished its work and drafts nine reports for President Hoover. The first, report of criminal statistics, is on Hoover's desk but not released until April 17. Madrid reports the Spanish republican government will not prosecute King Alfonso for acts during his reign. The new minister of state stated after a five hour cabinet session that pursuing Alfonso would amount to pursuing the monarchy itself.
In Raleigh on April 17 the Senate as a committee of the whole studied the biennial spending bill and carried over the $18,500,000 school appropriation pending revenue decisions. An amendment by Senator Jones to exempt instructors in state educational institutions from the salary cut was adopted. The measure preserves pensions at $320,000, funds for prison deficits, and $50,000 for an inland waterway ferry in Brunswick County, while constitutional officers and judges remain exempt from cuts.
In Chapel Hill on April 17 Lawrence Jones of Charlotte defeated defending champion Harvey Harris of Raleigh in a four set match to reach the state final. Jones will face Lovill of Mount Airy who beat Hanson of Wilmington in the other semifinal. Harris was the top seed last year.
NEW BERN April 17 Dr. A L Hyatt of Kinston was sentenced to a year and a day in Atlanta federal penitentiary after conviction for violating the Harrison narcotic act by failing to keep records. Judge I M Meekins ruled not guilty on four other counts relating to issuing narcotic prescriptions after a jury failed to agree.
The Charlotte News reports Al Howard former Notre Dame fullback will replace Rex Enright as freshman football coach at the University of North Carolina this fall. Enright resigns to join Alabama. Bill Cerney, North Carolina backfield coach, suffers a nervous breakdown and is recovering in South Bend Indiana.
Captain C. W. Todd and Private Spittle were injured when a burning house chimney snapped in two and toppled them from ladders. Spittle is not seriously hurt. Todd remains under treatment for internal injuries.
