Alabama Supreme Court Refuses Heflin Estoppel in 1928 Primary
The Alabama supreme court refused to estop the August 12 democratic primary from excluding Senator J Thomas Heflin and others who did not support the 1928 national ticket. The decision affirms the Jefferson County circuit court ruling sought by Horace C Wilkinson, Birmingham anti-Smith leader. The state Democratic Executive Committee had voted 27 to 21 in December 1929 to bar as candidates all who failed to support the 1928 ticket, while allowing them to vote in the coming primaries.
