Record crowd expected for Eisenhower visit in Salisbury
Up to 100000 people were expected for President Eisenhower in Salisbury North Carolina. The Rowan County bicentennial committee organized tours of textile plants a pageant Rowan 200 and concerts by the Virginia State College symphonic band and the North Carolina Symphony Orchestra. Eisenhower traveled from Augusta Georgia to Washington and then to Salisbury on the Columbine plane arriving late afternoon. He would be escorted to Shuford Field at Catawba College for the address then proceed to Winston-Salem to depart by 7 pm. Attending were Senator Clyde Hoey Representatives Hugh Alexander and Charles Raper Jonas and possibly Senator Willis Smith. The North Carolina National Guard provided security with the 2nd Battalion earning top Southeast training ratings. This marked the third GOP presidential visit to North Carolina in office following Taft in 1909 and Hoover in the early 1930s.
