The Republican leader pressed McNamara on alleged war material shortages citing a “shocking mismanagement” of the effort. He rejected McNamara’s denial of bomb shortages and warned of a national scandal over shipping backups in Saigon harbor as new evidence emerged.
McNamara held a Pentagon news conference asserting no basis for charges of bomb satan and dismissing shipping problems. He cited 331000 tons of U S bombs worldwide with 102000 tons in reserve, and projected production rising to meet a 50000-ton monthly air assault on Vietnam targets.
Henry Ford II defended the auto industry against broad safety attacks at the dedication of a $100 million stamping plant in Woodhaven Michigan. He cited 50 000 annual auto accident deaths as a bad situation and said Ford will continue improving car safety while criticizing Ralph Nader and questioning if safety hearings could hurt the economy.
Five year old Jack Baker, hurt when struck by a car in Cincinnati, remained alive but in serious condition. Dr Ferrara, Dr Earl Solomon, and Ann Solomon performed mouth to mouth resuscitation and heart massage to restart breathing after the boy turned blue. The incident remains under investigation with no charges filed yet.
