The Interstate Commerce Commission rejected the Piedmont and Northern Railway proposal to build about 127 miles along the North Carolina South Carolina border from Spartanburg to Gastonia and from Charlotte to Winston-Salem. The commission found the extension unnecessary and a duplicate facility, despite support from North and South Carolina governors and business interests. Commissioner McManaway dissented, while Brainerd noted jurisdiction limits for an electric railway. The company plans to pursue the decision in federal court.
