High Point Firefighters Aid Thomasville Blaze

High Point engine and six firefighters arrived at 1:45 to shore up the fight and protect surrounding homes as crews battled the flames. The 1902 school and the Hooper home were destroyed. Nitrate of soda fire destroys flats on Lawndale line
A car load of nitrate of soda burned after sparks from an engine ignited it three miles north of Shelby on the Lawndale railroad. Two flat cars were used to front the engine to shield shipments but one cart caught fire. The cargo was destroyed in 12 minutes with flames twenty feet high, rails warped and ties burned. Value of the soda reported at 700 dollars.
