Charles Griffith a veteran Orlando pilot and J D Pattermin a 21 year old student from Pittsburgh are missing after departing Orlando for a short training flight last Tuesday.
Prices for strawberries at the North Carolina market rose today as warm weather and sunshine supported fruit quality. In Danville Virginia a solicitor said warrants would be issued against two Danville police officers in connection with four deaths from an automobile truck collision at Hogans Creek.
Senator McAdoo asks President Roosevelt to pardon Dr Frank E Townsend an elderly California physician facing a 30 year term for contempt of a House committee. The Ohio, April 13 report notes the urgency to save Townsend from jail.
Chairman Norton of the House Labor Committee advocates a new wage bill setting a concrete minimum wage likely at 25 cents an hour. The administration would vest enforcement in the Labor Department.

In Paris the chamber approved Daladier’s national defense decree powers by a large majority 508 to 12 as socialist and communist factions backed centrists. The vote followed Daladier’s victory in the chamber and comes amid ongoing metal workers’ strikes and aviation plant resumptions. The franc strengthened to 31.90 per dollar in morning trading.

W. Lucas backed by Gov Horner’s Illinois Democratic faction builds a growing lead over Michael A. Igoe in the party’s senatorial race. Chicago results show Lucas with 674,388 votes to Igoe’s 649,643 with Cook County strong for Lucas and Igoe closing the gap in the Senate contest.
Insurgent forces under General Miguel Aranda intensified operations in Catalonia driving toward the Mediterranean. Francoists captured Chert near San Mateo, 14 miles from Vinaroz, and seized Sierra Monte Del Turmell and Sierra De Valdancha as the south front extended about ten miles.
In Birmingham Alabama April 18 the Interstate Commerce Commission examined reduced freight rates as essential for southern industrial growth. E P Jacobs of Jacobs Manufacturing Bridgeport Alabama testified that official rate regions north of the Ohio Potomac rivers and east of the Mississippi saw a sharp drop in business after 1980 and 1938 rate increases and urged lower rates to boost Southern rail traffic.
Chicago April 13. Government reports show 1938 farm cash income may be about one billion dollars below the 1937 total of eight and a half billion. Prices paid for farm products trend downward though demand stabilizes. First half cash income projected near three billion dollars versus three and a half in 1937, with potential full-year loss exceeding a billion dollars if the rate holds.
Several judgments have been filed against High Point firms for unpaid unemployment compensation and old age pension taxes. Interstate Transfer at 119 Virginia Avenue owes $63.55 for unemployment compensation in 1937 and $2.37 for December 1937 old age pension. Terry Hosiery Mills owes $21 for July and August 1937 old age pension. Woodall and Woodall owe $438.18 for August through December 1937 old age pension. Lewis and Holmes owe $814.71 for May through October 1937 old age pension.
A morning blaze in Morganton caused estimated damage over 50000 dollars. The fire began about 1 a.m. gutting Kirksey and Company furniture and hardware, and destroying the Morganton Industrial Bank and the Burke County Building and Loan Association occupying part of a two story block.

London April 13 The British cabinet gave final approval to the Anglo Italian friendship pact amid plans for War Minister Hore Belisha to visit Rome April 23. Diplomats say the accord could reshape European diplomacy and influence Mussolini’s alignment with either Britain and France or Germany.
County School Superintendent T R Foust and AllenJay community officials returned from Washington with a WPA pledge of 28000 for constructing a new gymnasium at the Allen Jay school. WPA covers 75 percent. residents provide the rest in stone and lumber.
Thad Eure signed the incorporation of Jackson Hosiery Mills Inc, and W M Field said production should begin within 10 to 14 days. The firm, with Dr W I Jackson and J Archie Myatt as corporators, bought Huntley Jackson Hosiery assets under a Greensboro federal court order and plans to resume hosiery manufacturing. The plant may rehire many former workers, though some changes will occur, after Huntley Jackson closed November 3 under bankruptcy act 77 B. The charter lists 100000 authorized capital and 75000 subscribed stock.
Sen. Wheeler of Montana urged railroad labor and management to meet Friday to gauge prospects for rail legislation this session. He chairs the Senate Interstate Commerce Committee and hopes to push a bill speeding bankruptcy road reorganizations, while predicting limited action beyond that. He doubts a $300 million administration loan for equipment is needed or desirable. His plan would push weak roads through bankruptcy cleanup quickly to cover fixed charges amid reduced revenues.
Jim Joyner of Goldsboro is named president of the University of North Carolina student body after spring elections. Other results list Bill Hendrix of Greensboro as vice president and Fred Rippy of Chicago as secretary-treasurer. Sophomore class picks Hargrove Bowles as president with Charlie Idol as treasurer.
