Halifax Resolves Ignited North Carolina Independence
In April 1776 Halifax delegates to the provincial congress unanimously instructed NC’s representatives to support separation from Britain. The Halifax Resolves marked the colony’s break with royal rule, following earlier resistance led by Hooper Caswell and Hewes and amid royal governor Josiah Martin’s failed attempts to maintain sovereignty. The Moore’s Creek fight bolstered support for independence, galvanizing public opinion and propelling NC toward the Continental Congress.
