Tar Heel Teachers Quit NEA Amid Integration Disputes
In North Carolina, more than 11 000 teachers left NEA membership over two years amid clashes over desegregation and civil rights. The Charlotte Mecklenburg court desegregation plan intensified tensions and jeopardized a merger between NCEA and NCTA. Joe Fisher notes national membership trends show growth toward 1.8 million.
