Carl R. G. Jr., administrator of veterans affairs, will dedicate the new 500 bed veterans hospital in Durham on April 19. The facility begins taking its first veteran patients this week as the complex opens.
Harnett County deputies continued a roundup of suspects in a five county theft ring. Six men were arrested in connection with at least 45 robberies across Harnett Cumberland Chatham Sampson and Lee counties. Wade Norton of Dunn was named leader after taking 11431 from a Fayetteville safe.
Greensboro attorney Mrs Elreta Alexander told the North Carolina League for Nursing panel that endowment funds are practically nonexistent in schools of nursing. She called the investment a strong public welfare return and urged action.
In Chapel Hill the Southern Short Course in Press Photography at the University of North Carolina advised reporters to focus on everyday people and local scenes rather than celebrities. Raleigh. Dr. Thomas Nelson, pioneer of the NC State College School of Textiles, dies at Rex Hospital after a heart attack. He would have turned 81 on April 24. Nelson headed the School of Textiles from 1924 to 1943 and retired as dean in 1943, remaining on staff until 1949.
Claretta Hodges, 16, of Dudley High, Greensboro, claims a three day expenses paid trip to the United Nations in New York after winning the regional oratorical contest for Negro students sponsored by United World Federalists. Runners up were Jo Alexander, 14, Allen High Asheville and Ruth McAllister, 16, Upchurch Raeford.
In Morganton a 12 room Claywell house, a Mor residential landmark, was destroyed by a morning fire minutes after Mrs. C. D. Hamilton woke to smoke and alerted her 12 year old daughter. Her husband and son were away.

Hamlet North Carolina police say Mason Huggins of Galivants Ferry South Carolina will be charged with drunken driving and manslaughter in the highway deaths of four people near Hamlet. He drove the car that collided with two others carrying Whiteville High School students to an Asheville convention on a bridge approach over the Seaboard Railroad. Thirteen were involved. nine students were aboard with five escaping injury. Victims include Madge Heath Greer 43 and her son Jackson Greer 17 both of Whiteville, Joanne Mae Blanchard 18 also Whiteville, and Harry Edwards of Galivants Ferry. Injured were Billy Valentine Nancy Lyon Huggins and Mrs Lee Greer.
Hall, new GOP chairman, clashes with left wingers over Eisenhower policy. He says no overnight miracles, aims to build a true Republican majority to win in 1956. Hall criticizes defeatist rhetoric while pledging no salary and living on his law practice. Roberts earned $32,500 as interim chair.
Washington officials reacted with hope and caution to the Panmunjom pact exchanging 5800 sick and wounded Reds for 600 Allies including 120 Americans. Senators Hickenlooper Sparkman Lehman praised the deal while urging careful scrutiny to avoid over optimism or complacency.

In Raleigh the legislature quickened as money committees finish work on a 637 million dollar budget and Umstead 85 million dollar bond plan. Subcommittee ends closed sessions and recommends dropping a 17 million cushion while adding 7.3 million in expenditures and granting a 10 percent raise to state workers and teachers. The Senate approves a 55 cent minimum wage bill, with floor action pending.
A survey by the American Newspaper Publishers Association reports a shift in five cent papers rising to six seven and ten cents. In 1951 about 1954 of papers sold at five cents, by 1953 only 1517 did. The trend shows price increases across daily and Sunday editions with more than ten cent Sundays rising.
In Atlanta the death of James Fisher, 45, from a skull fracture and hemorrhage spurs a full jail flogging probe. Investigators say L. C. Everhart, 40, a Negro trusty with a cork leg, admitted striking many prisoners but denied hitting Fisher, who died after being brought to hospital. Police report lax jail oversight and expect action after a full report. Fisher died Wednesday. Everhart had 430 days in jail over two years and claimed officers sometimes drag or hit unruly inmates.
At Panmunjom a landmark pact enables the return of 120 American and 480 Allied POWs from Korea with thousands of Communist captives in a 20 day exchange. The plan sets daily limits, requires no prisoner to return against will, and routes sick and wounded to the United States and Japan.
Rep. Ralph Fisher introduces a bill to empower Transylvania County Board of Education to establish a high school for Negroes at Brevard using Rosenwald School facilities even if daily attendance falls below 45. The measure is the sole new item in brief sessions. Senate approves four local bills and House eight local measures.
