Sunrise services and Easter fashion parades mark the holiday with a ban the bomb march in England. The Weather Bureau forecasts chilly dawn conditions across much of the nation as pilgrims gather at sacred sites near Jerusalem and the Sepulcher.
North Carolinians braved chilly dawns for sunrise Easter services from coast to mountains. The 194th sunrise service at Home Moravian Church in Winston-Salem drew about 20,000. Fields of the Wood hosted more than 8,000. Cherokee Mountains and Cherokee Indian reservation held dawn services. Gov. Dan Moore and family planned a quiet Raleigh observance. many others enjoyed a three day weekend with Easter Monday off. Temperatures mid 50s with partly cloudy skies eyed for New York Easter parade as merchants reported spring finery sales.
