More than 35 anti Castro pilots headed for a secret training camp after joining a call by the Cuban Revolutionary Council for a second war of liberation. The exiles, some tied to Batista, were stripped of clothes and IDs and sent toward a destination likely in Central America.

Ship Dara sinks in Persian Gulf disaster toll hits 212

The Dara, a 5300 ton liner, sank 15 miles off the Oman coast after a collision and fire. Casualties total 212 with 560 survivors. missing include 212 and many Asians. Americans L V Dorsch and his wife were aboard en route to retire after 35 years with Caltex. The British India Steamship Co. and navies fought the blaze as a towing plan failed and beaching was attempted.

Rain lashes Carolinas as storm brings heavy showers

The Associated Press reports a Sunday deluge dropped over three inches in parts of North and South Carolina. A low pressure system and eastward storm center caused gusty winds up to 70 mph in Wilmington where 3.48 inches fell. New Bern also saw about three inches. Train Wreck Injures 17 in Indiana Collision

In Terre Haute Indiana a leading Atlanta Chicago passenger train derailed after striking a fertilizer truck tank trailer. Seventeen people were injured none seriously. The truck driver Henry George aged 40 was not hurt as wheels from the trailer were hurled down the track about a quarter mile, causing the derailment of a three locomotive train traveling about 70 miles an hour.

Scotland Woman Is Top Mother of the Year

Mrs. Duncan T. Memory of Wagram in Scotland County was named North Carolina Mother of the Year at a luncheon with Gov. Sanford. Memory, a former housewife now teaching at Wagram High School, will represent the state at the American Mothers Committee meeting in New York on May 8 12. She wore navy and blue with an orchid.
