A major fire damaged the so called new palace once housing Wilhelm II and affected valuables and possibly the state library with about 3,000,000 volumes. The State Opera building burned from rear stage house to front, with flames reaching the proscenium. Explosives struck hospitals and apartments in other districts. Nine ships sunk or damaged by Nazi raids were reported as retaliatory strikes.
British air ministry said powerful high explosive bombs caused large fires in central Berlin last night. Overnight strikes hit an aluminum plant in occupied Norway and a Danish radio station. Roscoe S Cavin aged two died at Thomasville Hospital at 5 20 pm after injuries from a Tuesday dawn crash on Thomasville Road. He suffered severe head injuries and a possible internal injury. Woodrow Wilson Walker of near Thomasville, driver of the other car, is held on a manslaughter charge and will have a hearing today in court. Cavin, born December 26 1914 in Iredell County, had lived in High Point 15 years and worked for Carolina Container Company. He leaves a father, J F Cavin of Statesville, four brothers and two sisters and several half siblings.
