Major Boost in CP&L Wholesale Rates Tentatively OK'd

Federal Power Commission tentatively approved a 34.5 percent rise in Carolina Power and Light wholesale rates, effective May 1, with refunds if any portion lacks final approval. The hike would add about 33.6 million dollars in annual CP&L revenue and affect municipal systems and rural coops buying power from CP&L. Local officials warned of higher charges for residents and utilities, noting prior unresolved increases. Mayor Charles Kimbrell of New Bern urged Congressional review of FPC operations amid ongoing rate actions.
