Phosphate Miners Permitted To Use Large Water Supplies
North Carolina environmental officials approved expanded groundwater withdrawals for two phosphate mines in Beaufort County. NC Phosphate Corp will begin mining near the Pamlico River in 1977, drawing 35 million gallons daily while Texasgulf Inc will draw 67 million gallons, plus 10 million gallons recycled to NC Phosphate. The panel backed the plan, saying aquifer recharge can support up to 500 million gallons daily. Separately, seven western North Carolina dam owners were ordered to destroy or repair dams after inspections following a fatal dam breach near Asheville. Ten more dams are being drained voluntarily as results of the program.
