Five Killed In North Carolina Weekend Crashes
Five people died in weekend traffic accidents across North Carolina. Earl Spencer Oxendine of Red Springs and Wilmer Junior Locklear of Pembroke were killed 10 miles west of Lumberton when their speeding car left the road and hit a tree. Archie Stevenson Moore of Hookerton died when his car went out of control and struck a tree near Greenville. Larry Napoleon Fogg of Warrenton perished on U S 1 two miles north of Wise after his car skidded on wet pavement and hit a tree. The year’s highway toll reached 441, up from 433 a year ago.

Duke University scientists explain prairie dogs use dirt mounds around burrow entrances as a natural air conditioning system. Their scale model and wind tunnel tests show mound-induced faster surface air creates lower pressure, pulling fresh air through the burrow every ten minutes.
