The Associated Press reports a continued record breaking U S business boom into the next quarter with a possible mild recession later in the year. Economists warn labor tensions could disrupt forecasts including coal mine closings and strikes while consumer demand eases and inventories rise.
At Moscow, Secretary of State Marshall urges a special boundary commission including the United States, Britain, Russia, France, Poland and other allies to draft a permanent German Polish frontier. He favors joint administration of Ruhr and Silesia resources within a European economy and supports French Saar demands within existing limits.
Brooklyn Dodgers manager Leo Durocher was suspended for the 1947 season by Baseball Commissioner A B Chandler. Chuck Dressen and Harold Parrott faced fines as part of the inquiry into defamation charges by Larry MacPhail. Dressen was suspended 30 days for leaving to join the Yankees staff.
Brown & Williamson Tobacco Corp probes whether 3200 striking workers at plants in Louisville Petersburg and Winston-Salem violated the Smith Connally Labor Disputes Act after wage talks failed. Counsel Harrison Robertson notes the wartime act covers war plants and remains in effect.

Eugene Dennis general secretary of the Communist party did not show up for the House Committee on Un American Activities despite a subpoena. Investigator Robert Stripling urged prosecuting Dennis for contempt. Dennis' NY attorney Daniel Lapidus submitted a statement on his behalf. The committee planned further action at a later closed session.
Fred Nichols 32 pleaded no defense in Forsyth county superior court and was sentenced to 40 to 50 years in prison by Judge J H Clement for robbing two Winston-Salem cases at riflepoint last February 26. Records show Nichols was a fugitive from a Caldwell county prison camp. Paul Dillon 27 pleaded no defense to aiding in the robberies harboring Nichols and assault with intent to kill William H Dodson and received eight to 14 years. Dillon was accused of shooting Dodson March 2 in a dispute over shared proceeds for septic tank work.
President Truman explored price rise problems in a cabinet session that lasted one hour and forty minutes. The White House said no action was taken or planned and secretary Charles Ross briefed reporters after the midweek meeting. New attendees included Edwin G. Nourse and Marriner S. Eccles.
GOP Chairman Carroll Reece told a group of Republican women that President Truman is somewhat more popular than last November. He attributed the rise to the president adopting Republican themes and campaign tactics, while noting it is flattering for Truman to use a “me too” approach.
A freighter named American Farmer and a large collier Pittsburgh Seam collided about 50 miles northeast of Cape Henry at 9 36 a m. An SOS was sent and coast guard cutters Cherokee Speedwell and lifeboats from Parramore Machiponge were dispatched to the scene.
The North Carolina Supreme Court declined to grant Willie Little alias James Harrington a new appeal in his December Wake County rape case. The ruling leaves his death sentence in place unless the governor intervenes. execution slated for April 25. The court also ordered a new trial for Howard F. Moore, found guilty of assault with intent to rape in Pitt County, over insufficient evidence.
In Raleigh on April 9 4 Thad Eure and C L Shuping were named among potential candidates for North Carolina governor next year Eure a long time secretary of state since 1936 said it is not impossible he may run Shuping a Greens boro attorney and former Democratic national committeeman was cited in connection with a bid to counter regional political patterns Meanwhile State Treasurer Charles M Johnson indicated a likely gubernatorial announcement within two to three weeks J B Vogler of Mecklenburg and Lt Gov L Y Ballentine were also discussed as possible contenders R Mayne Albright of Raleigh said he would run no formal announcement yet exists.
Homer T. Hudson, president of High Point Overall Company makers of Anvil work garments, sold his common stock in the firm to Kirchofer and Arnold Inc. while remaining president and operating manager. The firm, established in 1899 and acquired by Hudson and C. C. Garrett in 1920, had Hudson become sole owner after 1946. No staff, production, or organization changes are planned.
The Greek government announced a general offensive to crush guerrilla forces in western Macedonia and Thessaly. Operations began at dawn after leaflets were dropped warning civilians, with strong forces prepared to block guerrillas from escaping by sea along Thessaly's eastern coast.
Two Democratic lawmakers denounced the 400 million dollar aid package as harmful to the United Nations and propped up by a dangerous pro communism stance. Other senators defended the plan, with Connally predicting only a handful will oppose and Vandenberg urging action to deter global aggression.
The Senate votes were set for 5 p.m. EST to decide the confirmation of David E. Lilienthal as chairman of the atomic energy commission. Supporters say gains in strength followed a 52 to 38 preliminary victory, with final confirmations for four other commissioners to follow individually.
UMW leader John L. Lewis is accused by coal mine owners of engineering a deliberate strike in defiance of federal court orders. The Justice Department prepares for another appearance by Lewis as fines totaling 3 510 000 are enforced and the National Coal Association calls Lewis actions a deceitful dodge aimed at delaying resumption of production.
Washington April 9 negotiators in the nationwide telephone strike closed an eight hour session with agreement almost in reach on a key unit of the Bell system. A government aided arbitration dispute over long distance wages and costs held up a settlement. The union proposed a three man panel or a one man arbitration with costs around 500 dollars a day. Compromise failed when the union would offset costs by deducting from members pay checks. The conference recessed to 10 a.m. with hopes of settlement but warned a broader strike would not end simply with long lines.
Brazil plans to push the United Nations to forge agreement among the five powers on reducing armaments. Ambassador Joao Carelos Muniz will urge progress at the UN commission session. Separately, UN atomic energy delegates scrutinized Russia’s inspection and control pact from ore to use.
