Training School Bill Gets Support
RALEIGH AP A bill to finance a new training school in western North Carolina for mentally retarded children was nearly approved in the House. Rep. John W. Umstead Jr. of Orange led with 86 signatures as birthday gifts marked his 70th. The plan seeks 40 million dollars for the school. The House also moved on retirement benefits for state employees and teachers, proposing to raise minimum monthly benefits from 60 to 70 with 15 percent raises for higher earners, and full-time solicitor cures were discussed. A liquor advertising curtailment bill and higher education control changes were sent to committees as line-by-line budget work looms.
