China's Mao Dismisses Teng Jiao-ping Promotes Hua Kuo-feng
AP reports China's Chairman Mao Tse-tung dismissed Teng Jiao-ping from all party and government posts and elevated Acting Premier Hua Kuo-feng to premier and first vice chairman. The move follows months of opposition and violent pro-Teng demonstrations in Beijing, signaling Hua as Mao's heir apparent. The Central Committee described the Tiananmen Square violence as counterrevolutionary incidents and noted Teng's removal while allowing conditional party membership. Hua, a 16-year-old former security minister from Hunan, leaps over rivals to lead the party and state amid ongoing political shakeups.
