USS New Jersey Recommissioned Amid Vietnam War Protests
The battleship USS New Jersey was taken out of mothballs and recommissioned in Philadelphia as antiwar demonstrators circled the river. About 50 pickets stood outside the gate while Coast Guard moved two approaching canoeists. Secretary of the Navy Paul Ignatius praised patience and national support for a swift, decisive end to the war. The 45,000-ton ship, with a 1,400-man crew, carries nine 16 inch guns and cost about $20 million to recommission.
