Boiler Explosion Kills Fireman and Injures Operator
A boiler at the High Point steam laundry on Pine Street exploded shortly after 1 PM, killing Fir Ingram a black fireman and seriously injuring S. B. Martin a white man. The 24 horsepower boiler was likely dry and cooled with cold water causing the blast. Martin suffered severe burns and is in serious condition. Ingram died instantly. The blast demolished the boiler room and hurled the boiler into an open field. Crowder brothers own the laundry and planned a new building on Washington Street.
