Severe spring weather across North Carolina brought heavy rains and tornadoes. At least one person, Herbert Jack Wall, 28, of Harmony, died when his car left Highway 117 in a driving rainstorm near North Wilkesboro. Floods closed roads and schools across Wilkes, Buncombe, Haywood, Jackson, and Henderson counties as rivers surged and bridges and highways were washed out.
