President Johnson urged all Americans to stand their ground and reject violence after the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. at Memphis. He spoke at the White House after a meeting with civil rights leaders and officials, pledging to keep plans for Vietnam talks and expressing sorrow for King’s death while affirming the dream endures.
North Carolina authorities halted alcohol sales nationwide in response to King’s assassination in Memphis. Durham’s Mayor ordered 950 National Guardsmen to armories at 7:30 a.m. Raleigh declared a state of emergency after Shaw University students’ Thursday night riot.

The body of Dr. Martin Luther King was placed on public view before its return to Atlanta. SCLC staff led a memorial service at 8:45 a.m. Andrew Young wept and knelt at the coffin as Abernathy quoted scripture.
Dr Martin Luther King Jr was fatally wounded by a sniper shot outside his motel in Memphis. Police sought a single white man staying at a nearby flophouse as the FBI joined the nationwide hunt led by Attorney General Ramsey Clark. King died at St Joseph's Hospital at 7 05 p m CST after emergency treatment.
In Saigon a senior U.S. officer said the Khe Sanh siege had been lifted though relief forces remained near the base. The five day operation to open Highway 9 produced 180 North Vietnamese deaths with 24 American and 211 American wounded.
