High Point students from elementary to college level show mass enthusiasm for The Beatles. Central High and Ferndale juniors discuss appeal, Ed Sullivan viewings, and desire to see the band perform in person. Beatle records top charts while some boys express jealousy or indifference.
A survey of 1 375 teens reveals 45 percent expect Beatle popularity to end within a year, 18 percent foresee two years, and 85 percent of girls remain fans while 58 percent of boys do. Most have seen the group perform, attracted by voices and the shaggy hair, though some condemn their talent.
Mara Joyce a Quintana Professional Children’s School senior in New York attends study sessions from 10 AM to 2 PM five days a week with half hour classes. She has been professional since age three and studies singing in the afternoons. For Patty Duke Show filming she uses correspondence schooling with weekly mail assignments. Mara carries books makeup and clothes to the set and may work long days. She is among 150 such students at the school 20 percent of whom are models and when on location their work is mailed worldwide.
The Pilot Club plans a meeting Tuesday at 8 p.m. It will be held at the YWCA location.
