Navy radio reports Ernie Pyle describes the Okinawa landing on Easter Sunday as Love Day. He recalls inspecting gear, boarding LCVPs, and traveling to a control ship to direct his regiment’s beachhead. He notes the invasion’s massive, organized complexity and the personal scale of war.
Soviet forces battle to encircle Vienna as they cross rivers and railways, advancing from Bratislava and pressing toward the Austrian capital. Moscow reports two airfields captured east of Baden and Schwechat south of Vienna while tank battles rage in suburbs.
Tokyo announces Premier Gen Koiso's cabinet has resigned as a group due to the gravity of the situation. A more powerful administration will be formed to take its place.
Emperor Hirohito directs Adm. Baron Kantaro Suzuki to form four new ministers to replace the Koiso cabinet after its resignation. The move follows U S Okinawa gains, as Japan concedes invasion of homeland nears. Koiso ousted Tojo last July amid United Nations pressure.
United States army units pushing toward Naha Okinawa faced stiff Japanese resistance while marines north of the wedge advanced three to five miles largely unopposed. Heavy artillery halted the 24th corps near Machinato air strip and limited the southeast coast gains to 2000 yards. The 7th division stalled after only 500 yards on the southeast front, as Marine corps extended northern lines.
Moscow denounces the 1941 neutrality pact with Japan as invalid since Tokyo aids Germany in the war against the Soviet Union. Molotov informed the Japanese ambassador the pact has lost its meaning. denouncement effective April 13 ahead of the San Francisco security conference.
Eighth army troops consolidate in the narrow Italian coastal strip between Valli di Comacchio and the Adriatic and push north near Porto Garibaldi. Allied forces indicate they are already close to Porto Garibaldi as patrols and limited action dominate elsewhere. U S 12th air force fighters and fighter bombers hit enemy road and rail networks, fuel and ammunition dumps, and a factory in northern Italy.
ASHINGTON AP report quotes Dwight D. Eisenhower advising President Roosevelt that a clean cut military surrender of Nazi forces is unlikely. He foresees extensive guerrilla warfare and says victory may come via proclamation rather than decisive collapse, with continued combat until fragmentation is controlled.
Malvern Hall Tillitt, 63, former Norfolk editor and lawyer, collapsed and died at an elevated railway station. He once led the Virginian Pilot and later worked with The Washington Post and The Wall Street Journal. His book influenced the 18th Amendment era. He left a widow, Mrs Margot Keene Tillitt.
Baltimore April 5. Ted Savage 61 offered to waive extradition to Santa Cruz California for a package of cigarettes. Savage obtained the cigarettes and officers now pursue return to face five charges of theft of 850 dollars and an automobile and escape.
New York officials report Joseph S. Fay and James Bove, AFL labor leaders, were sentenced in state supreme court to eight and a half to sixteen years each after a March 15 conviction for extortion and conspiracy. They were found guilty of extorting 62 000 dollars and conspiring to extort 280 000 dollars from contractors on the Delaware aqueduct project and have been jailed at the Tombs. An appeal was announced by their attorneys.
First Sgt. Jerry B. Davis of Macon Georgia became the first Black soldier in the United States to receive the Legion of Merit the fourth highest Army decoration. Davis earned the award for leading the 92nd division’s best section in Italy and for wounded service while delivering rations to gun crews during heavy fighting at the Arno river battle.
Harry C. Harrison, 20, a distant cousin, is charged with murder and arson in the death of Mrs. John V. Higham. The 71 year old widow was found dead in her burned Raleigh home Easter Monday with a fractured skull and burns. Police found Mrs. Higham’s wrist watch and jewelry in Harrison’s possession after he was arrested nearby for theft. Harrison, an ex Marine, denies involvement as detectives continue questioning him.
Paris reports the Third Army moving toward the Weser within 23 miles of Hannover while Allied forces push along a broad front near Minden and Hamelin. German retreat toward the Elbe continues as Ruhr encirclement actions seize German troops and hospitals.
Paris April 5 report says Gen Omar N Bradley's 12th army group now commands the First, Third and 15th armies plus the U S Ninth army. The Ninth is returned to the 12th group while the 29th tactical air command moves to the Ninth air force. The change gives Bradley control over more than one million men as the Ruhr pincer clears.
Allied armies push eastward from the Weser toward Brunswick and Berlin while another thrust drives through Thuringia toward Leipzig. The Seventh Army presses toward Nurenberg as Third Army tanks roll across the Thuringian plain toward Jena. British Second and U S Ninth face limited resistance as they advance, with 55 divisions east of the Rhine and 19 armored, totaling up to 4 750 tanks.
S P Brewer of the U S Labor Department announced that Firestone workers in Winston Salem had come to an understanding. Idle since Tuesday due to a wage dispute with utility workers, the plant expected to resume on the second shift this afternoon.
Senator Wheeler reports to the Senate food committee that red ration points are allegedly sold in New York City for six dollars per thousand. He says data was given to OPA and notes warnings of a high black market in meat. Wherry remarks that six dollars is likely the wholesale price.
More than 1,200 bombers and escort fighters attacked two German ordnance depots at Ingolstadt and Grafenwohr along with rail targets near Nuernberg Bayreuth and Plauen and an airfield near Nuernberg. The raid involved 600 Mustang and Thunderbolt escorts following prior night raids by RAF waves.
Secretary Stimson reports total U S casualties at 892 909 with Army 798 killed and 486 929 wounded and Navy 94 526 list 36 649 killed 42 988 wounded and 10 623 missing. He cites Japanese Philippine losses over 311 000 and a 23 to 1 killed ratio.
Daniel Coley, 25, an escaped convict from North Carolina, was captured in Jacksonville. Police say he escaped from the North Carolina State prison on June 4, 1942, while serving a 30 year sentence for murder.
