Raleigh April 4 AP Opponents of the MacLean bill and all sales taxes launched a vigorous counter attack today against Representative A D MacLean's radio speech defending the sales tax and a school bill as the North Carolina general assembly neared its end. Senate and house members present attended little business as they prepared for the sales tax fight. Senator Folger of Surry called the plan valuable only to the rich and unmerciful to farmers merchants and wage earners. Umstead led anti tax forces offering a statistical refutation of MacLean's arguments for state support of six months school via sales tax instead of ad valorem taxation.
