Three bombs hit Belfast city center with two workers wounded in a shop blast on Royal Avenue. Police and troops evacuated shoppers while authorities warned rioters that gasoline bombs could bring deadly force. Belfast mayor Joseph Cairns’s furniture store suffered a blast.
North Korea said the hijacked Japan Air Lines Boeing 727 will return to Japan with three crewmen and a Japanese government official held as hostages in Pyongyang. Radio Pyongyang said nine radical Japanese students will be investigated and not allowed to return. The plane had earlier freed 99 passengers and four stewardesses in Seoul in exchange for Shinjiro Yamamura, a Japanese vice transportation minister who volunteered to be a hostage.
