Deer Count At Uwharrie Shows Slight Increase

Prospects for deer hunting on Sandhills and Uwharrie wildlife management areas look good next fall. Biologists report one deer per 49 acres on Sandhills and one per 11 acres at Uwharrie, marking an increase over past years as adult animals and fawns remain, with tranquilizer studies planned at Holly Shelter Refuge to weigh, tag, and release deer for study. Continuous cool weather delays fresh water fishing for blue gill and largemouth bass though a few bass are being taken.
