RAF heavy bombers attacked submarine pens at Lorient and St Nazaire in western France last night, the air ministry announced. Two bombers were lost on the raid.
RAF carried out another night raid on German targets after a pause in English bombing. The air ministry said bombers attacked submarine bases at Lorient and St Nazaire with mines laid in enemy waters. A force of German fighters raided the British south coast, causing casualties in a shelter strike, while Britain remained largely unaffected by raids.
Washington April 3 the House passed late yesterday by voice vote a death penalty anti sabotage bill drawn to curb press and speech critics opponents warned the Senate judiciary committee would rewrite it to limit its scope. Proponents led by Chairman Sumners argued it required proof of intent to aid an enemy nation during war before the death penalty could apply. The measure would punish a list of hostile acts with death and expire six months after the war unless repealed.
Allied warplanes scattered nearly 20 Japanese ships in waters north of Guadalcanal as signs emerged of renewed enemy effort in the Solomons. Twelve P-40s intercepted nine Zeros. only two damaged Japanese fighters reportedly returned. One P-40 was downed with the pilot killed. Capt. John Hampshire of Grants Pass Oregon earned his sixth confirmed aerial victory. others with one each included Lieut. Charles Tucker, Capt. Elmer Richardson, Second Lieuts. James Lee, and Verne Brewer. Maj. Gen. Claire L. Chenault commands the 14th U S Army Air Force in China.
Hollywood reports Dorothy Lamour, 28, plans to wed Capt. William Ross Howard III of the Air Forces as soon as he can leave San Bernardino. Lamour’s prior marriage to Herbie Kay ended in divorce in 1939, and Howard was once married to actress Louise Brooks before their divorce.
Rubber Director William M. Jeffers said he may resign after July 1 if the rubber program is all set and progressing. He told reporters he would decide by midsummer whether the plan is shaping up and pledged to stay only if the program succeeds.

North Africa April 2. Colonel William E. Momyer of Seattle shot down four Stukas and damaged others to become the joint top American ace in North Africa with eight confirmed victories. Major Levi R. Chase of Cortland also downed two Bf 109s to tie his commander’s record as Momyer’s squadron destroyed about ten enemy planes on a sweep near El Guettar and American Warhawks Airacobras and Spitfires added to the tally, with about 40 enemy planes shot down from Feb 3 to yesterday.
In Tunisia on April 2 American batteries and 105 and 155 mm guns repelled Rommel’s latest armored thrust. Four engined Axis bombers used for the first time failed to crack American lines as 32 tanks were knocked out. German decoy tanks were spotted, and the assault at Kebih Gabes Gafsa crossroads was decisively beaten back, with infantry advancing through difficult terrain despite enemy air raids.
