Eisenhower laid to rest in Abilene after state funeral

The body of Dwight D Eisenhower was buried beside his son in a Abilene Kansas chapel near the Eisenhower Library. A 71 gun salute and rifle volleys marked the final rites as a West Point alma mater rang out. Nixon attended with other dignitaries as the former president received full military honors and his coffin was lowered into a vault. The procession moved through Abilene to the chapel and a brief service was held before the casket was sealed, ending the nation’s tribute in the quiet town where his boyhood began.

Black councilman forces Yorty into Los Angeles mayor runoff

Rescuers Battle Gas and Heat at Mexican Mine Disaster

Rescue teams faced gas, heat, and cave-ins as they dug through a soft coal mine where officials say 151 to 155 miners were buried by an explosion two days earlier. Legislature Considers Mixed Drinks Bill In NC

RALEIGH AP The North Carolina General Assembly received a long awaited mixed drinks bill as Mecklenburg County plans a separate measure. The statewide bill would allow sales of mixed drinks under restricted conditions in restaurants, while Mecklenburg proposes a local plan to be voted on in November 1970. The Mecklenburg delegation plans a public hearing in Charlotte, seeking a more liberal county option. The Travel Council backs the statewide measure but faces expected opposition. Mecklenburg pursues its own path.
