Cancer Checkups Are Urged At National Symposium

President of the American Cancer Society urged annual rectal and colon exams for all adults, saying 25000 lives could be saved yearly. Dr Ravdin of the University of Pennsylvania cited this as doubling the impact of current surgical efforts. The symposium also covered lung cancer links to cigarette smoking and advances in breast cancer management and early diagnosis.

One Fisherman Drowned Two Missing After Dam Fall

A Cape Fear River outboard boat plunged 20 feet over Lock No 3 dam near Fayetteville. John West 70 Hope Mills died, Floyd Ratley 36 swam to shore, while Spec 4 Mayo III and Glenn Ross remained missing. A fifth man went ashore for spark plugs as the boat went over the dam.

Snow Adds Light Snow to North Carolina Mountains

Snow whitened the North Carolina mountains with minimal accumulations except at Mt. Pisgah and Clingman s Peak where half an inch fell.
