King George II of Greece dies suddenly in Athens. His brother Prince Paul will be crowned co ruler at 7 30 with the government to issue messages to the people. Thesia 56 died of a heart ailment, and the vacancy triggers immediate royal and governmental announcements.
Foreign ministers council in Moscow met for three hours to discuss German reparations and industry with no agreed decision. Marshall aimed to gauge Russia’s willingness to negotiate a generally acceptable reparations plan, while Russia held firm at 810 billion dollars over 20 years. The stalemate suggested little progress toward breaking the deadlock and the group planned formal sessions for tomorrow.

Former vice president Henry A Wallace addressed more than 19 000 at Madison Square Garden in New York praising the crowd and accusing President Truman and Republicans of prioritizing oil over Greek hunger and aiding anti Soviet governments. He warned the plan to contain communism would divide Americans and unite the world against the United States.
Associated Press reports John L. Lewis and the United Mine Workers began a six day moratorium on soft coal mining to honor 111 miners who died in Centralia. The 400 000 AFL UMW members began the shutdown at one minute after midnight across time zones from the east to the west.
Washington April 1 The split between Senators Vandenberg and Connally over terms of the Greek Turkish aid bill emerges as a core issue. Vandenberg seeks UN power to halt U S action in the Mediterranean. Connally fears weakening American resolve and plans to oppose the amendment in a closed committee study beginning today.
In Raleigh on April 1 the House committee on elections and election laws voted unfavorably on Rep Story of Wilkes County’s bill to abolish the absentee ballot in general elections. Col Joyner urged passage while Story claimed absentee ballots caused most election wrongdoings. Also rejected were similar proposals in Davidson and Alamance counties. Absentee voting remains allowed only for armed forces in primaries.

Diplomats note U S policy toward Russia feels hostile and wonder if April Fool’s Day news carries broader implications for the big four conference. Stalin has not yet met with Secretary Marshall after 23 days in Moscow.
In Raleigh on April 1 Rep. Fisher proposed forming a legislative commission to study taxing cooperatives. The two senators and three representatives would report to the 1949 legislature. The measure previously killed would tax co operatives and impose income tax with limited exemptions.
President Truman urged Congress to extend rent controls to June of next year as housing remains tight and rental units lag demand. The House Banking Committee meanwhile advanced a 10 percent rise in rent ceilings and voted to repeal all government controls on building materials and construction.
Charles Parks a 53 year old taxi driver killed himself with a .22 caliber bullet at Johnson Homes yesterday afternoon about 6 o'clock. Deputy Roy Percise said Parks in poor health left a note saying he couldn't go on. Mrs Parks was away at the time.
Centralia dispatch reports the Centralia Evening Sentinel published farewell notes found in the clothing of 18 miners killed in last Tuesday's coal mine explosion. Notes addressed to wives children and mothers describe fear and love as rescue attempts failed and some men acknowledge they may not survive.
President Truman signaled possible longer controls after sugar rationing gained a seven month extension. Congress extended the president's power for 90 days to allocate a tri listed group of items, with sugar and price controls running to October 31.
Chairman Hartley of New Jersey urges a House Labor Committee vote on an urgent bill to block a threatened telephone workers strike next Monday. He frames the measure as a necessary preemptive action.
In Washington on April 1 4 Democrats blocked a House Labor Committee vote today on a bill to head off Monday's threatened nationwide telephone strike. Chairman Hartley announced the committee will reconvene tomorrow and will vote the measure up or down then.
House leaders deem the Hartley measure less urgent than Hartley and acknowledge limited chances for passage in the house this week.
Dekalb County Police report a Black man Aggie Herndon age 46 and his wife Lottie 40 were dragged from their home by four unmasked white men and severely flogged. The assailants, in overalls, claimed the couple had stolen items and demanded entry to search the house. They then forced the couple into a car and drove to a wooded area as the narrative ends with continuation promised on page two.
Berlin reports that Western Germany's textile sector is reviving through the import of over 50,000 tons of American cotton. The American and British authorities plan to expand the program to boost exports from the U S occupation zone to earn dollar credits for food and vital imports, with 60 percent of finished textiles for export and 40 percent for German consumers. Sidney Scheuer, U S War Department representative, praised the regime's plan after talks with Allied administrators in Berlin and Minden.
