Shortage Of Materials Delays Planes At Martin Factory
Baltimore April 1. An acute shortage of essential materials slows Glenn L. Martin aircraft production for army and navy. Factory runs at about 75 percent capacity as aluminum forgings castings other vital parts and government engines and propellers remain scarce. Subcontractors lack machine tools, forcing rationing and shifts. Propeller deficit sends new bombers to airfields with parts returned for others. About 15,000 of 17,000 workers remain, some departments five days weekly. Martin expects seven to eight months to begin closing the supply gap once new facilities come online.
