Coroner’s inquest clears Adams of murder claim

Coroner Horburger opened an inquest into the death of Albert Adams at the Ansonia hotel. He said evidence would show Adams was murdered by a prominent witness, but later the coroner and jury ruled Adams died by his own action. Subpoenas were prepared for witnesses including hotel staff and Adams’s relatives.

Little Change in Strike Situation at Salisbury and Spencer

Salisbury North Carolina October 5 There is little change in the strike situation today as the machine shops in Salisbury and Spencer sit out and there is little hope of an early settlement. The machinery department and the iron house are still idle. Rumors of other trades joining the strike exist but no developments show this yet.

Insurgent Disarmament Reported in Santiago Province

Oct 9 dispatches state all insurgents in Santiago Province have been disarmed except one band near Bayamo. Taft ordered cruiser Des Moines to embark the commoners at Santiago and land at Manzanillo to reach the insurgent camp. Also notes railroad reps at the American Traveling Passenger Agents convention in progress in Chicago.

Telegraphers meet at Chapel Hill in annual convention

The NécTime Telegraphers and Historical Association held their twenty fifth annual convention in Chapel Hill on Oct 3. Delegates arrived from across the United States and Canada, including Charlie AoTinker, former Western Union manager during the Civil War, with a large turnout and plans for club and society matters.

Spencer Strike Paralyzes Major Southern Shops Center

Salisbury October 8. Strikes by Southern Railway machinists center on Spencer shops the system's largest unit. About 160 machinists plus 25 apprentices and similar helpers halt work. the machine shop and foundry idle. Wages offered range from 0.5 to 1.5 cents per hour while men seek 2.5 cents. Missing Child Found At Last In New York

New York police recovered four year old Italian boy Willis Labarbara after more than two weeks of disappearance. The child was found wandering near Brooklyn Bridge and identified by his parents. Prosecutors say ransom demands were not paid and a trial resumed today at the Children’s Society.

Explosion of dynamite claims three railway workers

FLED JAIL BLOWN TO SEA BY TWO PRISONERS

Two Deer Island prisoners Herbert J. Henson and Charles W. Pilger escaped last night on a raft. They rode without oars into Shirley and out to sea amid a thirty mile gale. After nearly four hours they were found insensible ten miles at sea by the pilot boat Louise and returned to Deer Island.
