Hickory Milling Company Faces Possible Shutdown and Rescue Plan

Local Hickory business leaders met at the Chamber of Commerce to salvage the Hickory Milling Co. with losses and a nationwide flour shortfall. A proposal seeks seven thousand dollars and management by an outside miller to make the plant paying, or else sell the building and reorganize. Committee members were named to negotiate with stockholders while pledging support for home industries in the face of suspension.

Dr Corpening Marries in Granite Falls

A surprise wedding joined Dr Corpening a prominent Granite Falls physician and Miss Alice Searles of Robeson county at Mars Hill. The ceremony was kept secret, with only close friends aware of the plans. Miss Searles comes from a notable Robeson family and the couple wed in Mars Hill while she was there.

Siler City shipments for week ending November 1 totaled 887. Week ending November 14 rose to 3823, with a year to date total of 4210. Wet weather hindered farm work last week as many residents turned hunter.

Fisher Recital Draws Immense Crowd at Holy Trinity

Dr Charles R Fisher of the Presbyterian College gave a brilliant recital in Holy Trinity Church to a large audience in Hickory. Miss Hallman of Lenoir College organized the event, with pieces ranging from Schubert to Chopin and Gottschalk. The program included Bach, Dubois, Strauss, Haydn, and Vilbac, celebrating a broad classical mix.

New Presiding Elder Rev Lee T Mann to Meet Statesville Circuit

Rev Lee T Mann the new residing elder of Statesville district will hold the first quarterly meeting at Clarksburg church next Saturday and Sunday 15th and 26th. Mann, a Florida native with NC roots, educated at Emory College and joined Western North Carolina Conference in 1892, has served in pastorates on circuits and stations, known as a strong preacher and capable administrator and described as a premier ecclesiastical lawyer in the conference.

Death of Quintus M. Smith at 67 in Oxford

Quintus M. Smith died November 16 about 9 am in Oxford Ford after months of suffering. Two funeral services were held Friday at St. Peter's Church led by Revs. C. A. Smith and P. C. Henry. He served his state in the late war. age 67 years 9 months 24 days. Also mourning Mrs. John Ekard's fever recovery is noted.

Sharp Rise in Catawba County School Property Values

Mr A C Link of the school board notes a 700 percent increase in school property value in Catawba from 1900 to 1910 rising from 9235 to 68150. Census figures show 10149 school children, 6694 enrollment, and 4697 attendance, with calls for a six month term to replace four month terms.

Catawba College Holds Declamation and Mission Rally

Catawba College notes a Tuesday night declamation contest to pick a representative for Trinity's high school declamation contest. Menius named after a Sunday address by S J Kirk.
