Ships Lost in War At Sea Admiralty Statement

An admiralty report lists British losses since the war began: 56 merchant ships sunk by cruisers, 12 by mines, 62 by submarines totaling 130. 83 fishing craft lost, 24 sunk by mines. Since January 27 German submarines have sunk 39 merchant vessels and 31 fishing craft. Tonnage shows Great Britain has lost 458,006 tons in merchant ships and 13,585 tons in fishing craft.

Berlin authorities issued a citywide set of dining rules effective June 1 to curb waste. Speeders Fined In County Court Seizures

The Enterprise reports three speeding cases in county court on Friday. Carl Webb of Shelby forfeited his $15 bond after failure to appear, facing a $7.50 fine. Rue and Earle Whisnant also charged with speeding. R. L. Smith and Worth Bumgarner, both cited for drunkenness, paid $2.50 fines plus costs after admitting prior rum consumption.

Gulflight Torpedoed Through A Mistake

Washington reports the American steamer Gulflight was torpedoed in the English Channel on May 1 by a German submarine that misidentified her as British. The captain died, two crew drowned, and the ship was beached after taking on water. the error arose from two similar boats convoying Gulflight, one with wireless gear, causing the commander to fire.
