In North Carolina the Electric Bond and Share Company and allies control many municipal light and power concerns, with the Cape Fear Buckhorn Shoals project at the center. The account describes deceit, foreclosures, and deaths of Morgan and Gray, two local entrepreneurs who lost their Cape Fear Power project to bondholders, while warning of powerful interests using water power to extract high rates.
Mrs. E. B. Cline writes from Hickory about a journey through Italy. She tours San Lorenzo with Medici chapel, describes priceless manuscripts, Lorenzo’s home, Rome on St. Peter’s day, and a vivid Naples scene of color and life before pausing at Pisa and Florence, noting Rome’s quiet at first and Florence as a treasure house.
A fragment from Frances Cline in Florence dated July 2 1909 ponders when a merchant will cease advertising backed by a whimsical verse about the wise man. The letter recounts visits to churches galleries and shops along with reflections on travel to Fiesole Vallumbrosa and daily life in Italy.
Farmers institutes will be held at Hickory on Monday Aug 2 at R L Shuford's Oakwood farm Monday Aug 9 and at Sherrill's Ford Wednesday Aug 11. At Hickory a women’s institute led by Mrs F L Stevens and Miss Josephine Evans will cover topics for farmers wives with practical instruction. Lectures by Dr F L Stevens T B Parker J A Conover and W W Finley will accompany a demonstration car with two loads of implements for indoor and outdoor use. Other locations will feature Prof C L Newman Dr G A Roberts and John W Robinson alongside local speakers. Morning sessions begin at 10 with afternoon at 1.
