Lawyer and Judge Have an Encounter in County Court

Newton July 23 A sensational clash followed a civil case in Superior court where Clarence L Whitener of Hickory attacked Charles H Mebane editor of Chiwaba County News and county judge. Whitener claimed the editorial referred to him while Mebane denied it. The trial hinged on a minor Bank of Hamilton dispute over a newspaper contract. Whitener argued forcefully in court and in jury remarks, while Mebane explained past actions about false statements involving a teacher and a woman. The bar split on Whitener's tactics but he vows to publish his side with rebuttals. The affair drew broad interest with sentiment split between both sides.
