Hildebran on July 21 reports Miss Jessie Hahn from West Hickory visiting relatives near Hildebran. Mrs Mostemer and daughter stayed with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. A N Adterholt. Mr Shaw spent time with Mrs Moose of East Hickory, bringing little Josephine. Mrs S F and children returned from Florida and plan to settle here. A subscription school led by Miss Laxton of Morganton began Monday in the hill school building with scholars present and more expected soon. Farm families are urged to bring food baskets and attend the farmers institute at Connelly Springs on Tuesday July 25.
State Farmers Union at Raleigh plans July 26 and 27 gathering at A and M College. Delegates to be elected by county unions. Governor Kitchin and Dr J Y Joyner among speakers. College provides rooms. beds require sheets and pillow cases. Meals 25 cents. special railroad rates available. Dr Alexander urges full attendance and notes plans for agricultural schools.
An institute event is slated for Newton with a meeting planned in the court on July in session. Local organizers announce details for attendees and schedule. The notice highlights a community focus and formal proceedings.
In Rochester New York a Rural Life article advises Northern farm seekers to explore the South in summer for soil and climate insight. At Charlotte last Thursday Judge Allen defeated Manning 526 to 484 to win the Democratic nomination for state office. The platform endorsed good roads, fair public service supervision, against illegal areras, and a revenue tariff. Overman and others gave strong speeches while Wat fee and Gov. ex- Gov. Joeck led supportive remarks. R. U. Doughton won the Congress nomination in the 8th district after a long balloting process. County tallies show broad regional support across Alexander to Stanly, with 156% needed to nominate.
Hon E Yates Webb was renominated at Shelby on the 13th for a eighth term by a lively Democratic convention led by J L Seales. B T Falla nominated Webb with strong support from W C Dowd and others. Dowd recalled a pledge to provide a Democratic majority to offset Republicans Madison and Mitchell, and Webb accepted a vigorous speech. An executive committee was elected with members from Charlotte Mountain Kings Mountain Lincolnton Hickory Morganton Marshall Burnsville Bakersville and other towns. A resolution endorsing W Dowar of Chases for Speaker was unanimously approved.
The Republican county convention in Newton nominated candidates for county offices including J Yates Killian for the House J B Leons Sheriff J A Isenhour Register of Deeds J W Lawrance Treasurer TL Indy for Surveyor and for County Commissioners R Lesneckett Jonas Hunsucker T E Sherrill R M Bumgarner and John W Robinson Donald Witherspoon chaired and R G Mace and Dr Everhardt served as secretaries Ex Mayor S S McNinch and Jake Newell spoke urging A A.
Catawba County Court at Newton reports Judge Biggs earning commendation for firm, clean administration. Cases seen include State v Sid Seapock and Will Deal fined 25 plus costs for disturbing religious worship. State v Bob Keever et al. Larceny with Keever fined 50 plus 1 6 costs, others 25 plus 1 6 costs. bonds set for 12 months. Other rulings include cruelty to animals not guilty. obstructing public road with suspended judgment on cost. affray with road sentences. larceny cases with fines and good behavior bonds. embezzlement 12 months on roads.
Lincoln Times editor J F Slick claims he was beaten by County Superintendent Heavener in Lincolnton over alleged misappropriation of school funds. Slick recounts the assault, blood drawn, police intervention, and his vow to continue advocacy for rural rights.
The Lowry Avery family reunion in Yorkville highlighted ties of Dr and Mrs James Lowry. Seventy five visitors traveled from Arkansas Oklahoma Florida the Carolinas Virginia and Maryland. Sumter Lowry Tampa chaired the new organization with Rev W T Matthews Oklahoma as secretary. Notable attendees included Dr Sydney A Lowry and Mrs Lowry of Luxora Arkansas who plans to return to Hickory after the note to the Democrat.
