Crop Improvement Committee Produces 1913 Report
The Crop Improvement Committee of Catawba County reports receiving 1000 from the National Crop Improvement Committee of Chicago on January 1 1913 to fund farm demonstration work. HL Foster was chosen to lead efforts for the county. The February meeting reelected him for another year. Expenditures totaled 82.73 with 417.27 remaining in the treasury for continued work in 1914.

Lookout Railroad Project Begins Near Statesville
Southern Power Company's Brooks-Parker Construction Co started grading a railroad 10 miles west of Statesville toward the Lookout Shoals power plant site on the Catawba River. About 46 laborers from South Carolina arrived to work with horse-drawn equipment, while oversight is by L. B. Sloop. Dam and plant work waits until the rail line is completed and the site cleared.

Two of Catawba's Aged Citizens Pass to Rest
Capt P W Carpenter of Conover dies at 80 after a long life. Born January 1864 in Lincoln County, he served as captain in the 57th North Carolina Regiment and was a Confederate Army veteran. Survived by nine children and funeral held at his Conover home, then buried in Newton.

J B Lutz of Newton Dies After Stroke at Home
J B Lutz of Newton North Carolina died Friday night at his home five miles east of the city after a stroke of paralysis. He was a Civil War veteran, member and leader in New Jerusalem Lutheran Church and a proponent of farmers organizations including the American Society of Equity and Farmers Union. He is survived by a widow and seven children.

Murder confession follows drownings in Spartanburg baby case
Spartanburg South Carolina February 3 two month old infant found drowned in Whites millpond near Spartanburg. Parents Miss Fieta Pendleton 19 and Clyde Caldwell Clement 23 arrested almost simultaneously as they planned to flee to Charleston and San Francisco. Pendleton admits Clement urged abortion and they disposed of the child by throwing it from a bridge into Lawsons Fork Creek. Local officers tracked them to Spartanburg and Greenville then Chesnee. Pendleton sobbing identified the baby as hers. Clement remained calm and offered no statement. Both held without bond on murder charges.
