Negroes Arrested Charged With Murder in Newton

Sheriff Hewitt brought three named Black men David Nixon Sam Henderson and Ed Rozelee to Newton after a murder near Tocam[]sooty. A hearing is set for the following Saturday with local officials. Also reported are a death from Uphold fever a Boy named Joe Lawrance and a serious arm fracture from a toy accident. Clarence Smith and Miss Reep wed at Reformed church and will live in Stertown. Six young men attended the funeral in East Vie cemetery. Insurance ads and local notices close the item.

Deputies to be Placed on Salary Basis in East NC

Washington DC August 26 deputies in the eastern North Carolina district are to be put on salary basis following a conference with Assistant Attorney General Graham and Marshall William Dorteb and Josiah W Bailey. The measure aims to standardize compensation, replacing the fee system, with western district already on salary.

Refugees Return Home Aboard Baltic From Liverpool

The White Star liner Baltic reached New York with 2125 passengers and about 6000 sacks of mail including over 1500 American refugees from Berlin and Queenstown. Among steerage were 700 Americans. Florence Ralph recalled hearing the German emperor’s speech and brave reactions in Berlin. Passengers described harsh wartime conditions and limited medical aid in Kiel. The Baltic was escorted by the Essex to near the three mile limit, with praise for Britain’s efforts to aid stranded Americans.

Lightning death of local line worker shocks Newton

Marshal Lee Whittle aged 20, a resident of New Be, was killed by lightning last Friday while repairing a pole for the Southern Power Company near Oratery. Funeral services were held in Newton.

Caldwell County Roads Greatly Improved Across Township

Lenoir August 28 bonds voted for Love lady Township road improvements have been sold to a Hickory bank and funds will soon be available. The road committee plans early work starting with the Le noir and Hickory road. Substantial progress includes a 99 foot Gunpowder Creek bridge and over a mile of new road in Duction township. Private subscriptions and county aid funded the projects. Harper of Lanett leads the effort, dedicating days without pay to supervise the work.

Death by own action in Barret Mountain area

In Ellen dale township Alexander near Barret mountain Mr Bently about 75 years old died Saturday afternoon by tying a hickory cord to a tree and his neck then pulling free to choke himself. He reportedly had prior talk of self harm two weeks earlier. Survivors include his wife and five grown children. Funeral services were held Sunday conducted by Rev J J Shaver.

German Army Defeats French Near Neufchateau

Berlin reports Grand Duke Albrecht led German forces to defeat a French army at Neufchateau. German troops captured guns, flags, and prisoners including several generals such as Prince Rupprecht of Bavaria, Crown Prince Frederick William, and Grand Duke Alf. The Rupprecht army took 150 guns at Lunville and Blaincourt while advancing toward Maubeuge after pursuing the French beyond Toul.
