W A Campbell of Maggie recounted a tale of Hickory’s origin claiming a hickory stick beating gave the town its name, while the Lenoir News offers an alternate 1812 story linking to Old Hickory Jackson, a cabin tavern, and “Hickory Tavern” eventually shortened to Hickory. The clash highlights local historical uncertainties.
