Hershey Chocolate Company installed five new wrapping machines at its factory to automate handling of foods as fully as possible. The equipment wraps fifty almond bars per minute in tin foil or cellulose, then seals them in boxes, a key visitor attraction and part of the company policy.
Hershey combines the Valley Glen and Brookside farms into Seed Propagation Farm to raise pure seed on 7500 acres. The program covers wheat corn rye oats potatoes vetch alfalfa soybeans cowpeas and vegetables with trained staff and Hershey Industrial School involvement to teach true agriculture and combat adulteration.
The Mothers' Club opens a stall at the Hershey Market every Saturday starting September 23, selling cakes pies buns and rolls with special orders two days ahead. Proceeds benefit the local Kindergarten and sales occur in the Hershey Store basement at 1 p.m. sharp each Saturday.
Band of chicken thieves hit Cyrus Boyer at Derry Church and Harry Gordon’s flock, then Frank Carpenter’s yard and Daniel Stoudt’s coop, stealing chickens in repeated visits. Police suspect a coordinated group behind the local poultry thefts.

The Hershey farm expands Poland Chinas and Duroc Jerseys, increasing hog housing to 40 acres with self feeders and alfalfa pasture. The plan, begun quietly by Mr. Hershey, shows pigs growing well on legumes and slop, drawing visitors who praise the innovation.
A M Schaffner, contractor of Hanover, is finishing several homes in the area. Projects include a single brick dwelling in Palmyra for Mrs Detweiler, another dwelling for A B Yingst in Hershey, remodeling Alvin Kettering’s Derry Road home, a home for John Hitz at Hockersville, a home for John Foreman in Hershey, remodeling for Mr Baer near Hummels town, and a home for John Landis near Hanover. All near completion and ready for occupancy in three weeks.
A preliminary survey maps a new trolley line from Manheim to Hershey to improve access to Harrisburg and Hershey’s growth. The route would run about 20 miles, serving near 10 000 local residents and tapping the rich farm region, with Hershey cooperative supervision possible.
Irene M. Hornsby of Reading was elected physical director of the Hershey institution by the Young Women's Christian Association at its September board meeting. A New Haven gymnastics graduate, she taught in New Haven schools and playgrounds, volunteered in Reading clubs, and served as a camp fire guardian before joining Hershey. She succeeds Miss Mary Burch who resigned.
Derry Township schools set opening dates for the year with Hershey High School starting September 29 and grade schools on October 2. Affected students must bring previous records and report cards for entrance or classification exams on specific mornings. The M. S. Hershey Consolidated School describes brighter rooms, improved grounds, and a larger staff lineup including Supervising Principal Stacy E. Peters and teachers such as Abraham Strassburg, Ruth Engle, Anna Lloyd, and May Hershey.
Miss Katherine Snavely entertained at her east Hershey home on Saturday with 35 guests from Lancaster Harrisburg Hummelstown and Hershey. Afternoon socializing featured music then supper in Hershey Park followed by a dance at the pavilion. In Palmyra on Saturday afternoon Lebanon and Palmyra contested the championship. Attendance was high though play was loose with Lebanon ultimately losing to Palmyra 8 to 5.
Two light freight engines collided head on in front of a factory on the Philadelphia and Reading line Sunday morning. One engine had just arrived from Lebanon with milk cars and, after a delay, moved to the west bound track. The westbound engine slowed but could not avoid the crash. crew on the freight engine were jolted, but escaped. Wrecking crew worked late to clear debris.
Nine members of Governor Brumbaugh's party toured Hershey farms Cloverdale and Homestead, the Park dairy, and the Industrial School escorted by H C Reinhold. They praised Hershey stock and the Industrial School work. Mr Moon sold nursery stock and praised High Point landscape.
Hershey baseball men have excelled this season with amateur clubs. Eddie Foster leads York Moose with strong hitting while Edward Zimmerman impressed fans Saturday with three hits and solid defense at third. Patty Miller of Duncannon excels in the Dauphin Perry league outfield. Dearolf of the same club is a top slugger and strong behind the plate. Amos Skiles of Mountville, previously with Hershey, holds the best pitching record in Lancaster county league.
Rev. N L Linebaugh of First United Brethren Church Hershey baptized William Minnich 74 and Mrs Minnich 71 by time immersion at Lyonaville bridge in Swatara Creek. Witnesses were Harry Garman and Victor N Gingrich. It was his oldest couple baptism since taking the ministry.
The Otterbein Men's Bible Class of the Mira United Brethren Church will hold a sociable on Monday at 8 o'clock. All members and friends of the church are invited. President Dr M L Hershey and secretary Victor Gingrich preside.
Over fifty Hershey Chocolate Company office staff and friends gathered Tuesday evening at Prospect Heights for a large corn roast. Many officers and helpers prepared the lunch, making it one of the happiest outdoor gatherings.
W E Houseworth Jr of Selinsgrove praises Hershey as a “city beautiful” noting its attractive homes clean sanitation and modern industry. He highlights the Hershey Chocolate Company employing thousands and cites the local trust company bank with a large capital and vaults as enduring landmarks.
The Lancaster County fair week starting September 26 will showcase large scale circus and vaudeville attractions. Highlights include daily balloon ascensions with huge balloons and daring parachute drops, Hay Wagon parallel bars, Calvette casting act, Layman and Chauline dancing duo, and Blaney performing with a top state band.
