A crowded social log lists visits and travels among Hershey Reading York Duncannon Harrisburg Lebanon and Chambersburg. Notables include Mr. and Mrs James Bobb Mrs Early Look and Kathryn plus numerous local residents and store staff attending events and games.
Bethlehem Bach Choir marks its twenty-fifth year with two festival sessions in Hershey June 16 17 under Dr J Fred Wolfe. The group has toured Carnegie Hall Philadelphia Havana and Ocean Grove and may travel to Europe in 1924 led by president Charles M Schwab.
On Friday May 11 at 7 45 pm the Hershey Central Theatre will show a notable screen production featuring hunting and fishing scenes along Canadian and Pacific Railway routes with camping and scenic effects. The film is free courtesy of the Central Pennsylvania Fish and Game Association Harrisburg and children under 14 must be accompanied by parents.
Swatara Branch of the Dauphin County Christian Endeavor Union schedules a social at the Union Deposit Fire Hall on Saturday evening May 19. A clipping party will accompany the event with music from the Union Deposit band. The branch includes Hershey Hummelstown Union Deposit societies and nearby areas. Proceeds fund County and State pledges. Watch next week for more details.
The Ladies Guild of Derry Presbyterian Church will hold a bazaar on Tuesday May 22 at Rev. Taylor's home 20 West Chocolate Avenue with useful articles and novelties for sale. Further details will appear in next week's issue.
Julia Claussen, Metropolitan Opera mezzo, and Paul Althouse, noted Met tenor, appear in a joint recital at Hershey Park Convention Hall on Decoration Day May 30. Tickets range 50 cents to 1.50. Recital promotion highlights Claussen praise from Chicago and New York critics while Althouse touts church choirs as a source of vocal talent.
The Hershey Park dancing auditorium launches its 9th May Hop on May 23 and 5th Dance of Roses on June 18 with high class orchestras. Dancing runs 8 16 to 11 15 each Wednesday and Saturday and on holidays, promising refined, enjoyable evenings.
Hershey Alumni Association schedules a meeting Friday May 11 at 7 30 in the Hershey High School building. The session will elect officers and arrange details for the forthcoming banquet. All members are urged to attend.
The Héfenéy High School pupils staged The Gypsy Rover a three act romantic musical comedy before a near full Park Theatre audience. Miss Leah H Burns and Miss Mary Gregg Darrow directed with Mr Frank P Wentzel guiding the orchestra. Cast included Alexander Magrini Lucile Gilman Antionetta Bilotta Earl Hackman Niles Long John Bomgardner George Zeigler Mildred Hocker John Gilman and others delivering a bright lively performance with tuneful singing and strong humor. The reviewer called it Hershey’s biggest theatrical event and praised the staging costumes and overall success.
Dustin Farnum stars in Three Who Paid a William Fox production at Hershey Central Theatre tonight. George Owen Baxter wrote the story and Joseph Franklin Poland adapted the screenplay with Besse Love in a dual role opposite Farnum. Supporting cast includes Frank Compeau Fred Kohler Daly Conklin and Robert Agnew.
Glenn Stover, our marble champion, hopes for a challenger to prove his skill. He would face the Hummelstown champion if one exists, or take on the near-champion. He believes a worthy opponent from Hummelstown or Palmyra is possible.
Tom Mix in the William Fox picture 3 Jumps Ahead plays at Hershey Park Theatre Tuesday evening May 15 at 7 30. The story follows rustlers and Texas Rangers with Mix captured and escaping a cave under a waterfall then leaping a 20 foot wide 90 foot deep canyon as part of a string of daring stunts.
Hershey School schedules two exhibit evenings on May 6 and 17 with seven o’clock openings and daytime visits for those unable to attend. The annual commencement is set for Friday evening May 26 at Park Theatre with Dr. Charles W. Stoddart delivering the principal address and Rev. W. E. Daugherty giving the Baccalaureate sermon in Central Theatre. The Senior Class will present a play The Elopement of Ellen and field day activities occur Memorial Day morning on Park Athletic Field.
Hershey campaign leader Mr. H N Herr urges all residents to attend a Monday May 14 meeting at 7 PM in the Red Cross rooms of the Hershey Central Theatre building. The effort aims to eliminate flies by destroying breeding places and promoting a cleaner town for health and citizenship.
Hershey set to host the Golden Bucks of Lebanon on Saturday afternoon May 19 at 3 o clock. The Hershey lineup includes Waksman at short and Smith at third with Killinger catching Bonn at first and Spahn at second. New signings from Altoona and Roanoke College bolster the roster as Hershey aims to field a competitive team this season.
At the John Elder Men's Bible Class gathering in Derry Presbyterian Church on May 7, members from Harrisburg shared views on local needs. They approved supporting evening church services and considered reviving the Boy Scout idea, plus adopted an Armenian orphan named John Elder for eight months of support.
Dr Edward Y Rich who took over the late Dr M L Hershey's practice died at his home Sunday evening of heart failure after morning illness. He had come from Mechanicburg in January and quickly gained friends. Rich served seven years as dispensary surgeon at the University of Pennsylvania Hospital and interned at Haywarde and at U of P Hospital. He had a general practice in Mechanicsburg before moving to Hershey and was buried in Philadelphia Thursday.
